Various studies in different parts of the world concur that the pandemic effect on labor markets has affected the youth more than any other age group. These are common findings in several reports including those from Resolution Foundation (for UK); Asian Development Bank (ADB) (for ASEAN); the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (for India); Statistics South Africa (for South Africa); and Fitch Ratings (for MENA). The job market is competitive.

The Malaysian Government introduced MySTEP (Short-term Employment Programme) to offer 50,000 contract jobs in the public sector and in GLCs starting January 2021. Aligned with this, PETRONAS launched GEES or Graduate Employability Enhancement Schema. GEES aims to enhance employability of new graduates to obtain long term employment or to set up their own businesses.

In line with this Fish Camp Learning Sdn Bhd was selected to mount a series of webinars for ‘Mock-Job Interviewing’ to prepare the youth for the job market. As #speaker #facilitator of these webinars, I recognized that in addition to external stressors, the youth were equally anxious about the #jobinterview. Interviewing techniques continue to evolve beyond the Q&A format. Tech tools, simulation, virtual and augmented reality, as well as behavioral assessments are not uncommon. However, the employer’s key focus remains in getting the best-fit for role and organization. This was our focal point in the sessions.

The webinars focused on key aspects of the interviewer, the interviewee and the interview. Shifting from student #mindset to ‘workforce mindset’ was emphasized. The importance of the need to #research not just the role, but also the industry and company was highlighted. Key pointers on building physical, mental, and emotional #presence were then shared. Finally, challenging interview scenarios were applied to practice communicating an interviewee’s value, pitch, and self-awareness.

Each session was attended by more than 170 participants. I was amazed by their keen enthusiasm and participation during the Q&A which I happily extended well beyond the allotted time.
